Abstract: Studying patterns of intergenerational social mobility is seen as critical for establishing the level of openness in societies. Education is seen as one of the key pathways for upward social mobility. What is the picture in contemporary India? How do the patterns of social mobility vary by education and in turn what impact does education have on social mobility chances and on occupational attainment? Using national level datasets and a birth cohort approach, the author traces patterns of social mobility in India and the role of education by gender, caste and across locality.
