Abstract: According to NFHS-3 data 46% women experienced violence when their partners consume alcohol. What is more significant is that it appears from the data on women reporting different forms of violence—physical and sexual—suggests that with 54%, Bihar tops the list. Violence against women in Bihar on account of men consuming alcohol intends to undone various important measures for women empowerment like 50% Reservation in local bodies to Mukhyamantri Cycle Yojana, 35% reservation for women in government jobs in the state at all levels among others.
It needs to be underlined that the presentation would not be much on the Economics of prohibition rather Sociology of prohibition more in tune with distinct priorities of the women. The presentation would inquire whether this prohibition is mainly going to uphold and improve women’s economic position in society or the status, or the distribution not of wealth but of honour or prestige, or of political power with reference to Bihar. The State response till now is positive towards it, however much is to be done at the societal level.
