Notions of the Political in Contemporary German Theater
a lecture by
Jan Lazardzig and Matthias Warstat
Professors of Theatre Studies at Freie University, Berlin
on
Thursday October 12, 2017, at the SAA Auditorium at 5.30 p.m.
This lecture sets out to discuss notions of the political in contemporary German theatre. Rather than simply prolonging the list of acclaimed political theatre makers like Piscator, Brecht, Stein, Castorf and Schlingensief, we shall, in a first step, elucidate notions of the political in authors such as Aristotle, Arendt and Rancière. In a second step we shall discuss the presence of these concepts in recent responses from both independent theatre makers (for example the Center for Political Beauty and Milo Rau’s Institute for Political Murder) as well as institutional theatres (for example the Gorki Theater Berlin) to the so-called refugee crisis.
