Constitutional Rights: Muslim Women's Struggles and Triple Talaq Judgment
by
Hasina Khan
(Feminist Activist)
Bio:- Hasina Khan has been part of women’s movement for last three decades. She has been a member of Awaaz-e-Niswaan and founder of Bebaak collective, which works with various women’s organizations across the country.
Abstract:- In this seminar, Hasina Khan will discuss the historical significance of the recent judgement on Triple Talaq by the Supreme Court. She will situate this in a context where it has taken the Supreme Court seventy years to even speak about the rights of Muslim women and when it did, it only offered a strike down on instant triple talaq, choosing to be silent on triple talaq itself. Yet, this is also the first time that constitutional guarantees have come into discussion with relation to Muslim women’s rights. This has opened up a space for individual Muslim women, as well as Muslim women's organisations, who have come together collectively to raise their voices and make this judgement possible. Thus, what is also significant about this historical moment is the large presence of Muslim Women’s organisations which have become so visible and prominent in the activism around the issue of triple talaq.
