Does Indian IR engage enough with International Economics?

International Political Economy (IPE) also known as Global political economy as a sub-discipline of International Relations has traversed an interesting five decade journey since Susan Strange wrote the seminal article in International Affairs (April 1970) International Economics and International Relations : A Case of mutual Neglect, where she lamented ‘the growing gap between the study of International Economics and International Politics’ at a time when the changes taking place were far too rapid and ideal to develop a modern discipline of ‘International Political Economy’. It set the ball rolling for the new discipline, which gradually developed firm roots, adapted theoretical principles and spawned research across the (primarily) western world on political imperatives behind the global economy and vice versa. Today IPE is a fairly well established branch of study in IR programmes across the world and even has independent status in the University system at many places. The present talk looks at how the discipline has taken roots and evolved in India, particularly within the conventional political science and international relations programmes in the Indian Universities system based on the ongoing work of the author. The focus of the talk would also be on examining the extent and depth to which Indian IR scholars have dealt with issues of International Economics by way of economic theories, data and methodology in areas of global trade, regional cooperation, climate change and cyberspace by looking at both the content of the courses taught on IPE in Indian Universities and also the writings that appear in leading Indian IR journals. It also tries to look at the converse relation, i.e. whether work on IR informs the contemporary Indian research on International Economics.
Prof. Rahul Tripathi is presently a Professor of Political Science at the newly constituted D.D. Kosambi School of Social Sciences and Behavioural Studies, Goa University . He had been teaching at the erstwhile Department of Political Science since 2000, which he headed since 2015 , mandated to teach papers on International Relations, India’s Foreign Policy, International Political Economy and South Asia.
