Abstract: The ongoing developments in Muslim education system in Kerala can generate new discourses on pedagogy and provide news themes of engagements with the state and its systems. Although the developments are still in shaping and the process of transformation taking place in education both in its structure and system, they deserves special academic attention as they are unprecedented. These developments could be understood in the background of the quest for integrating religious education, which has always been the integral part of Muslim education across time and space, with the modern secular education. Unlike other Muslim societies, where this quest inspired revivalist movements with political aspirations, Muslims in Kerala experimented news modes of assimilation and accommodation in education and value systems. The success of this movement is inspiring their co-religionists in other parts of India calling for a drastic transformation in the system of education. This paper will be an attempt to understand these dynamics and locate the trends in a larger educational movement and the discourses on tradition and modernity in Muslim education.
