Abstract: Social change and social mobility are central to the idea of education. This is to be achieved not only through pedagogy, and curricula but also through rules, regulations and policies that govern higher education institutions. The talk will focus on how the institutionalisation of behaviour related to gender norms takes place in HEIs, expressed through hostel regulations, monitoring and penalising certain behaviour. The second aspect that will be discussed is the perception regarding caste and reservation among teachers- the changing student composition in classrooms, social mobility through education and also caste groups among teachers. The talk will draw upon the field work done across 30 universities and engineering institutes in 2019-2021 in which 627 students and 118 teachers were interviewed.
Speaker: Dr. Sushree Panigrahi is the author of Ideology, Conflict and State Control in Higher Education: A Sociological Analysis, Sage (2022) and was a Senior Fellow at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Contemporary Studies, New Delhi
