Applications are invited for the following posts in the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) funded project entitled “Center for computational Biology and Bioinformatics: Infrastructure, Education, Training and Research in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi” at School of Computational & Integrative Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University

1. Project Associate-1:   1 position @ 31,000+24% HRA pm
2. Project Scientist-1:    1 Position @ 56,000+24% HRA pm
3. Scientific Administrative Assistant/ Attendant:  1 Position @ 18,000+24% HRA pm

The selected candidates will be appointed on purely temporary basis initially for a period of one year or till his/her services are required by the Project Investigators.

Essential qualification and eligibility:
1. Project Associate-1:
   Master’s Degree in Natural Or Agricultural Sciences/ MVSc or bachelor’s degree in
 Engineering or Technology or Medicine from a recognized university or equivalent.
(Upper age limit: 35 years)

Desirable: Two years experience of developing Bioinformatics or related software tools/ managing databases/ Systems administration/ networking/ HPC management with a proven record of software products in public domain.

2. Project Scientist-1:  Doctoral Degree in Science/ Engineering or Master’s Degree in Engineering or Technology (Life Sciences/Biotechnology/Bioinformatics/Plant Biology or any other related field) from a recognized Institute/ University.
(Upper age limit: 35 years)

Desirable: Two years experience in large-scale biological data analysis/ developing Bioinformatics or related software tools/ databases with a proven record of publications and/or software products in public domain.

3. Scientific Administrative Assistant/ Attendant:  Graduate degree in any discipline.
(Upper age limit: 50 years)

Desirable: Proficiency in basic computer operations and two years experience in maintaining research projects in an academic institution.

Job Roles:
All these positions are primarily meant for managing and contributing to the Bioinformatics computing infrastructure facility and at SCIS, JNU.  

Administrative Assistant/ attendant will maintain the budgeting and progress reports and any activities related to BIF in particular. He/she will help the SCIS faculty in managing their research projects, including those funded by BIF. In addition, they may be assigned any suitable task by the PI of the project.

Project Associate will primarily be responsible for maintaining high performance clustering systems of SCIS and its faculty members, help the SCIS researchers in the development of tools and database, web servers under the guidance of the PI.

Project Scientist will be responsible for carrying out research activities in the field of Bioinformatics and emerging computational technologies, needed for creating web and standalone tools in this area. He/ She will also work with the PI on setting up and planning to develop a data and service center and computational tools based on the research conducted by the SCIS faculty. He/she may be engaged in teaching/ training on the topics of Bioinformatics/ Computational biology, helping SCIS faculty in preparing manuscripts and research grant applications/ reports from time to time as per the time scheduling advised by the PI.

The selected candidates will be appointed on purely temporary basis initially for a period of one year or till his/her services are required by the Project Investigators. The project lasts for more than 4 years and annual extensions/ re-selections will be based on the performance evaluation, subject to the availability/ release of funds by the sponsoring body (DBT).

A warm welcome to the modified and updated website of the Centre for East Asian Studies. The East Asian region has been at the forefront of several path-breaking changes since 1970s beginning with the redefining the development architecture with its State-led development model besides emerging as a major region in the global politics and a key hub of the sophisticated technologies. The Centre is one of the thirteen Centres of the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi that provides a holistic understanding of the region.

Initially, established as a Centre for Chinese and Japanese Studies, it subsequently grew to include Korean Studies as well. At present there are eight faculty members in the Centre. Several distinguished faculty who have now retired include the late Prof. Gargi Dutt, Prof. P.A.N. Murthy, Prof. G.P. Deshpande, Dr. Nranarayan Das, Prof. R.R. Krishnan and Prof. K.V. Kesavan. Besides, Dr. Madhu Bhalla served at the Centre in Chinese Studies Programme during 1994-2006. In addition, Ms. Kamlesh Jain and Dr. M. M. Kunju served the Centre as the Documentation Officers in Chinese and Japanese Studies respectively.

The academic curriculum covers both modern and contemporary facets of East Asia as each scholar specializes in an area of his/her interest in the region. The integrated course involves two semesters of classes at the M. Phil programme and a dissertation for the M. Phil and a thesis for Ph. D programme respectively. The central objective is to impart an interdisciplinary knowledge and understanding of history, foreign policy, government and politics, society and culture and political economy of the respective areas. Students can explore new and emerging themes such as East Asian regionalism, the evolving East Asian Community, the rise of China, resurgence of Japan and the prospects for reunification of the Korean peninsula. Additionally, the Centre lays great emphasis on the building of language skills. The background of scholars includes mostly from the social science disciplines; History, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, International Relations and language.

Several students of the centre have been recipients of prestigious research fellowships awarded by Japan Foundation, Mombusho (Ministry of Education, Government of Japan), Saburo Okita Memorial Fellowship, Nippon Foundation, Korea Foundation, Nehru Memorial Fellowship, and Fellowship from the Chinese and Taiwanese Governments. Besides, students from Japan receive fellowship from the Indian Council of Cultural Relations.
