Bylane Becomes the Main Road: Adaptive Preferences and the Social Construction of Capabilities in a Tamil Village

Abstract : India is historically known for its social stratification based on ascriptive statuses of the caste system in the world. The inheritance based on ascription prefers “few” at the hierarchy where they most often enjoy socio-economic privileges. In this background, the current analysis of the social construction of capabilities is specifically based on the adaptive preferences (APs) of educated under-employed youths (EUEYs) in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. As the Chapter is conceptualising the Capabilities Approach (CA) (Sen 1999), it underscores complex interactions between human agencies and the social structures. For this, the reflexive insights have been collected from an ethnographic restudy of Sripuram in Tanjore district.
