Jawaharlal Nehru University is dedicated to providing full accessibility to all of its pograms and services for individuals with disabilities. Part of this goal includes the provision of web services which are accessible by those with disabilities. Disabilities involving vision, hearing, mobility, or other areas may necessitate the use of adaptive software and/or hardware, University is running HEPSN Scheme on the recommendations of UGC to create awareness among functionaries of Higher Education about specific educational needs of persons with disabilities.

Counselling Centres
Following a meeting of Advisory Committee and Student volunteers, Counselling services for the students with special needs has been started in the University's Health Center, keeping in mind the problem of adjustment and other problems of psychological in nature faced by some of the physically challenged students.
Mr. Anant Kumar, a student volunteer who is also a Rehabilitation Psychologist by training, looking the functioning of counselling service. The university is providing this service through the Counselling Unit of Health Centre, JNU.
JNU is also maintaining proper register of disabled students coming for counselling, mentioning the type of disability and problems (Psychological/ Physical or any other problems related to adjustment/ studies/ relationships, etc). Notices regarding the Counselling Service are pasted at the different places within the campus to inform the JNU community and Students with special needs about it. The services are made available six days a week (Monday to Saturday) at specified time.
Awareness
In this regard, through our volunteers we are contacting students with special need and as possible we are helping them. We are also putting up notices related to our scheme to make them aware of services and facilities available.
Employment
University Disability Unit is also assisting disabled graduates in getting successful employment in public as well as private sector and in this regard unit is in touch with various Non Governmental Organizations active in this field as well as some Government Institutions. As part of awareness programme, through volunteers, the unit is also in touch with the students with special needs to understand their problems and help them. Notices and pamphlets related to the Scheme to make the student community aware of these programmes are also put up and it is proposed that in future workshops and seminars shall be organized as part of awareness programme.
Providing access to persons with disabilities
University on its own had developed some ramps, which were visited by the Review Committee and improvements were suggested to be carried out as per the guidelines of the Ministry of Urban Development.Guideline materials have been procured from agencies and at least one ramp has been constructed by the Engineering Department of the University. Equal Opportunity office (EOO) of the University has sanctioned Rs. 3.77 lakh with Engineering Branch to construct ramps with rails in the Hostels and academic Complex including library.
Future Programmes
1. To make University disable friendly i.e., all school buildings, library and administrative blocks will be connected through ramps.
2. Employment opportunities for students with special needs will be explored.
3. Agencies providing financial benefits to physically challenged students will be short listed and contacted for creating endowments in JNU.
4. Facility of computer aided reading for blind students will be expanded in the Central library by the University.
5. A special wing of a hostel will be equipped with facilities like special gymnasium, recreational equipment, and special toilets.
6. Construction of special toilets in the existing buildings and library will be explored.
