The Lohit Hostel is one of the 18 hostels of the JNU which is located in the western part of Paschimabad-II. It is a co-education hostel that started functioning in 2004. The Girls' wing has two blocks with three floors each. The Boys' wing also has two blocks with three floors each. The hostel has a total capacity of 172 rooms - 90 for girls and 82 for boys.
The Hostel has only double seater rooms. Every resident is provided with a study table, chair, bed and book shelf. Each room has two built-in cupboards with doors. Water coolers are installed at appropriate points in the building to provide cool filtered and safe drinking water to the residents. There is a 24 hour water supply in bathrooms, toilets and mess. The hostel offers mess facility throughout the year. The residents are served healthy and nutritious food at reasonable rates. The mess is privately managed by a contractor on no-profit no-loss basis. The functioning of the mess involves active participation of the students. The Mess committee and Hostel committee consist of six students, who are elected by the residents. The Mess committee collectively decides the Menu and other issues regarding the Mess, and is in constant touch with the residents to take their feedback on the quality of the food served. By rotation, one out of the six Mess Committee members acts as the Mess Secretary for a period of one month to be succeeded by another member. The Mess Warden as the ex-officio-Chairperson of the Mess Committee oversees the functioning of the mess. Anything pertaining to mess is discussed and decided in the regular monthly mess committee meetings.
Residents are also provided with adequate sports facilities. The hostel provides a gymnasium and a television room each for girls' and boys' wings. A Reading room and visitors' room are also available to the residents. The hostel has table tennis and a badminton court. It seeks to provide an excellent study and cordial social environment to the residents.
The hostel is built in such a way that the residents get maximum natural light and ventilation. There is a beautiful lawn surrounded by trees like Amaltash, Neem, Ashok and Acacia etc. The residents can be seen sitting in groups in the lawn in the evenings, discussing, debating and relaxing. A pleasing garden with flowers flanks the main entrance of the hostel. The hostel lies between two other hostels namely Mahi-Mandvi and Chandrabhaga. Behind the hostel lies a lush green jungle with Neelgais, rabbits, peacocks and varieties of other fauna and flora.
