Brief Bio-note : Babu P. Remesh is a Professor at the School of Development Studies, Ambedkar University Delhi (AUD). Prior to joining AUD, he was Director, School of Interdisciplinary and Transdisciplinary Studies, IGNOU. During 1998-2009, he was a faculty member at the V.V.Giri National Labour Institute, NOIDA. His broader research interest lies on labour, informal sector and development studies. He has also been actively working on various research methodologies – qualitative, quantitative and interdisciplinary.
Abstract : In the broader context of growing job insecurities of journalists, the talk will focus on the skill; training and educational aspects of media work in India. It will provide an overview of the ongoing dilemmas in the field of journalism including mismatch and obsolescence of skills; intensified worker-redundancy and the issues related to lack of certified qualifications (especially for those who are at higher age brackets). All these problems, it will be explained that, add to the job insecurity of journalists and force many of them to continue with the same firms with stagnated career options and let down self-esteem. The discussions will be mainly based on the findings of an ongoing research study supported by ICSSR, which focuses on the job insecurities of print journalists in India.
