Abstract :A recent trend in India’s regional diplomacy is the increasing visibility and prominence of its Northeast region. Geographic location of the Northeast region serves strategic and economic interests as India seeks greater engagement and integration with the wider region. Conventional frameworks do not fully appreciate and capture the significance and role of Northeast in regional diplomacy, as they tend to see it from the lens of overall diplomatic relationships. This paper attempts to offer an analytical framework using the concept of “subregion”. By doing so, it argues, an expanded conceptualization of “subregion” may better situate, explain and help understand the various dimensions of Northeast India in regional diplomacy.
