The National Service Scheme (NSS) sponsored by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, has been in operation in JNU since July 1975. The basic objective of the NSS is to arouse and enrich the social consciousness of students. The scheme is intended to provide an opportunity to students to engage in constructive social action, programmes, develop co-operative team spirit and gain skills in democratic leadership quality. The Unit has been organizing activities related to social problems widely. Specific programmes relate to :
a) Environment: Plantation activities, cleanliness drives, plastic elimination campaign as well as seminars and workshops by eminent environmentalists are conducted.
b) Literacy: - "An adult literacy programme called "Chirag Tale Andhera Hatao" is being conducted for the karamcharis on the Campus. Two hours are devoted everyday for the purpose. A separate classroom with necessary infrastructure is also there.
c) Health & Hygiene:- Workshops and seminars by Doctors and Professors are conducted on issue related to AIDS, and stress to create awareness.
d) One-Day Camps:- Camps are conducted at historical sites where plays are staged for the public to make them aware to protect their monuments. Cleanliness drives are also part of the camp to protect the historical sites. Such camps have been held at Qutub Minar,India Gate and Red Fort etc.,
e) One-Week Camps: Camps are also conducted in various parts of the country for volunteers who have been active throughout the year.
These camps are of two types Nation Integration Camps and Adventure Camps.
In addition to this students are sent abroad for a cultural exchange programme.

NOTICE
Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), the statutory body for controlling water and air pollution from various industries, has informed their interest in engaging JNU students for ascertaining operational status of pollution control devices installed in industries. The DPCC will provide the students field level training and an opportunity to see status of pollution control in various industries.
The students who are interested to forward their names to do internship with DPCC during holidays/weekends can contact the NSS Programme Coordinator at Room No.8, SIS and give their names for the same on or before 20 January 2015. DPCC will finalize the appropriate students and formulate work schedule after discussion.
Report of the Blood Donation Camp organized by NSS JNU with Indian Red Cross Society on 1st April,2014 JNU
National Service Scheme, JNU Unit and Blood Connect, in collaboration with the Indian Red Cross Society organized a voluntary Blood Donation Camp in JNU on 1st April, 2014 from 10am-4pm behind the Central library of JNU.
Prof. Abhijit Karkun, Programme Coordinator, NSS JNU inaugurated the camp and appreciated the efforts of the donors and volunteers towards this noble cause. According to him, blood donation is the best service to the human kind. By donating the blood, one helps the needy and may save a precious life. To the young and healthy it's no loss. To sick it is hope of life.
There was great deal of enthusiasm among the students during the camp.
This was the first time in JNU that a registered a record number of 108 students & staffs donated their blood.
"A total of 235 people turned out to donate blood during this 6 hour camp but altogether 108 were able to successfully donate blood", said Md. Farhan Zeb Khan, Convener of this Blood Donation Camp NSS JNU."The enthusiasm of JNU community was great and many people came to donate blood even after the official timing was over" said Vivek, a volunteer.
Refreshments, Certificates & Donor Cards were given to all the donors.
The event was graced by Prof. Sudhir Kumar Sopory, VC, JNU, Prof. Sudha Pai,Rector, JNU and Dr. Sandeep Chatterjee,Registrar, JNU. They all appreciated the efforts of NSS JNU Volunteers who organized this camp with such an enthusiastic response and a record number of 108 donors and congratulated NSS JNU Unit for coming forward to organize such events of social benefit and also assured to support such similar events in the days to come.
