Gadāyuddhaṁ is a celebrated classical Kannada text written by most powerful poet Ranna of tenth century. He retold Mahābhārata on the model of ādi kavi Pampa’s Vikramārjuna Vijayam. Most of the critiques treat Gadāyuddhaṁ as a static text, solidified in time and space. However, this popular text is not just a ‘text’, but expanded itself over the centuries to become a family of literary and performance traditions in Karnataka, yielding to the social imaginaries and the historical aspirations of artists, sculptors, musicians, and many others. Such multiple narratives should have been a part of understanding Gadāyuddhaṁ text.
This program intends to illustrate how Gadāyuddhaṁ has been recreated in gamaka, harikata and Yakshagana tradition to reach much wider audience.
