About Professor Ashok Parthasarathi
Professor Ashok Parthasarathi, a physicist, electronics engineer, S&T policy researcher and S&T policymaker, served the Centre for Studies in Science Policy, Jawaharlal Nehru University as a Professor during Feb. 2000 - July 2005. His commitment to the promotion of S&T and their application to the development of security of the nation have been acknowledged by many and has led him to hold important positions in the Government of India – former Secretary in the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), the Department of Electronics (DoE) and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). He also served as S&T Adviser to late Prime Minister Mrs Indira Gandhi, working from the Prime Minister's Secretariat for about a decade. He was involved in establishment of different public sector companies in electronics sector making hi-tech electronic products ranging from microchips to optic fibre and satellite-based communication systems. Professor Parthasarathi's contribution to the development of the defence electronics sector has been widely acknowledged as has been his contribution to solar electric systems. His work to build up (jointly with other faculty members) the Centre for Studies in Science Policy (CSSP) at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) – the only such centre in South Asia during that period – was path breaking in establishing teaching and research capacity in the country in this key area.
